Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airway completely collapses, blocking airflow into the lungs. The harder one tries to breathe, the tighter the airway seals. This airway obstruction persists until the brain partially awakens the person. Unconsciously, he/she will close the jaw returning the tongue and throat to a normal position.

The sleep apnea cycle – falling asleep, jaw relaxing, airway collapsing, unconsciously awakening with a gasp, falling back asleep – can repeat itself 50 or more times per hour during the night. With a blocked air passage, one does not receive enough oxygen. Both the awakenings and oxygen deprivation can then trigger other health problems.

Bite Adjustment

Thousands of Americans suffer from myofacial pain (commonly known as TMJ). Myofacial pain therapy seeks to correct the disorder by restoring balance between the teeth, muscles, and joints of the jaw. We offer a variety of both surgical and non-surgical treatment options for TMJ. Therapy may involve the use of a specialized splint, called a neuromuscular orthosis, which is used to recreate balance, or later on, a semi-permanent splint. Mouthguards

Mouthguards are flexible plastic appliances worn to protect the teeth, lips, cheeks, tongue and jaw. They are used during activities that can damage the teeth, most often during contact sports and – surprisingly – during sleep.

Properly fitted mouthguards can also help reduce the risk of head, neck and brain injury by absorbing and dispersing some of the shock caused by blows to the chin. Considering that the mouth is the most commonly injured part of the body during contact sports, mouthguards should be an essential component in most physical activities. Nightguards are specially designed mouthguards worn to protect the teeth from grinding (bruxing) or clenching of the jaw during sleep.

Migraine/Headache

Maybe a dental office is the last place you'd go to cure a chronic headache. And that's understandable. Dental visits are often associated with discomfort, not pain relief. But not here. Recent research has given us a new device that can reduce or completely eliminate tension headaches as well as many kinds of migraines. It's simple to place, easy to wear, and virtually fool-proof.

It's called an NTI-tss, or Nocioceptive Trigeminal Inhibition Tension Suppression System. And although that's quite a mouthful (we call it a “Night Time Insert”), the tiny little polycarbonate device certainly isn't.
